Role Overview

Reports to:
Chief Executive Officer

The Commercial Lines Broker is responsible for developing and managing relationships with retail agents and clients while driving new business, renewals, and revenue growth. This role involves evaluating complex commercial risks, placing coverage with appropriate markets, negotiating terms, and ensuring accurate, compliant account management from submission through binding.

Key Responsibilities

  • Establish, develop, and sustain strong relationships with retail agents and clients to support business development and long-term growth.
  • Source and pursue new business opportunities through prospecting, referrals, targeted outreach, and active participation in industry networks.
  • Act as the primary contact for agency partners, ensuring a high standard of service and responsiveness.
  • Market, quote, negotiate, bind, and manage new and renewal accounts in alignment with company and carrier requirements.
  • Review submissions to assess risk characteristics, identify exposure gaps, and determine appropriate coverage strategies.
  • Evaluate complex risks and apply sound judgment in selecting markets and structuring insurance programs.
  • Secure favorable terms, pricing, and coverage options through effective negotiation with carrier partners.
  • Create and deliver professional proposals, clearly outlining coverage terms, pricing, and key risk considerations.
  • Manage the full placement lifecycle from initial submission through binding and policy issuance.
  • Work closely with internal teams to drive efficient execution and deliver a seamless experience for clients and partners.
  • Support the resolution of coverage questions, endorsements, audits, claims, billing issues, and other service-related matters.
  • Ensure all submissions, quotations, and policy documentation are accurate, complete, and in compliance with internal guidelines.
  • Maintain detailed and organized records of communications, coverage decisions, and account activity.
  • Develop, oversee, and expand a profitable book of business, with responsibility for production, retention, and revenue performance.
  • Track and evaluate key performance indicators, including new business success, retention, premium growth, and loss experience, and implement improvements as needed.
  • Stay up to date on market trends, carrier appetite, and industry developments to enhance placement strategies.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to Assistant and Associate team members to support their development.
  • Conduct all business activities in accordance with company policies, carrier requirements, and regulatory standards.
  • Keep all required licenses current and in good standing to transact business.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development through continuing education, industry events, and pursuit of relevant designations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or comparable professional experience in the insurance industry
  • 3+ years of experience in wholesale insurance or commercial insurance underwriting
  • Strong understanding of commercial Property & Casualty (P&C) coverages, risk evaluation, underwriting principles, and insurance market placement strategies
  • Proven experience managing a portfolio of accounts and collaborating directly with retail insurance agencies
  • Demonstrated ability to assess risk exposures, determine appropriate coverage solutions, and place business with suitable carriers
  • Active home state P&C license is required; Surplus Lines license is preferred
  • Track record of achieving or surpassing sales or production objectives within a commercial insurance setting
  • Solid familiarity with commercial insurance markets, surplus lines, and fostering positive carrier relationships
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to understand client requirements and convey complex insurance concepts clearly
  • Strong decision-making, time management, and organizational skills, with the ability to adapt to changing industry trends
  • Ability and willingness to travel to the office and attend in-person meetings as needed

Compensation & Benefits

The annual base salary range for this position is $85,000 to $300,000. Actual compensation will vary based on multiple considerations, including but not limited to an individual’s background and qualifications, relevant experience, geographic market conditions, role complexity and responsibilities, demonstrated competencies, training, and other factors.
